Doximity's $63M Pathway deal aims to prove Al in medicine can be both fast and trustworthy.

Doximity, America’s biggest physician network, has paid $63m for Pathway Medical, a clinical-knowledge platform designed to guide doctors with evidence rather than guesswork. The deal, closed on July 29th, combines $26m in cash with $37m in equity. The aim is simple: to give artificial intelligence in health care a sturdier scientific backbone.
Doximity already serves more than 2m clinicians through its messaging, referral and telehealth tools. The firm sees AI as the next step. Its bet is that Pathway’s trove of guidelines, drug data and trial results can turn machine output from slick suggestion into reliable advice. In an industry where mistakes are costly, that distinction matters.
The timing is strategic. Big tech firms and startups alike are racing to launch AI assistants for doctors. Most look impressive on screen. Few are trusted in practice. Reliability, not novelty, will determine adoption. “The addition of Pathway’s evidence engine will help ensure our AI offerings are not just powerful, but clinically reliable,” said Nate Gross, Doximity’s co-founder. Doctors wary of automation may find such assurances persuasive.
The acquisition also underscores a wider shift: the contest in digital medicine is moving from code to data. Regulators and insurers want proof that algorithms improve outcomes and save money. That will reward those with well-structured, verifiable information. Yet plenty of barriers remain, from legal uncertainty over malpractice to concerns about bias and the opacity of machine reasoning.
Even so, momentum is building. By blending its scale with Pathway’s evidence base, Doximity hopes to move AI from pilot projects into daily practice. If successful, the deal could mark the point where artificial intelligence stops being a side project in medicine and starts becoming standard kit.
